Negative Rejection

I'm really close to being ready to give up.

Yesterday, I received my adjudication sheets from GTC. I clearly didn't pass.

Today, I found that I wasn't cast in any of next semester's shows. Again.

Maybe I should change my major. Maybe this is just a hint for me to pick something different. "You love it, but you suck." Maybe that's the message.

Unlike other majors, getting A's in all your classes, being well-liked by your professors, involving yourself in extracurriculars ISN'T ENOUGH.

What is enough? When is it time to just throw in the towel?

Is it now?

  1. Maybe you are simply too smart. You remember what Hitchcock said about actors.

Concentrate on writing and directing. Then, as some point, you can cast yourself. Particularly if you write something specifically for yourself.

Have you ever considered a one-woman show?

See, I am writing short paras cause you do.

One thing about theater, aside from the fact that it's impossible to make a living at, is the gamesmanship, its ruthless nature. Not being cast is clearly not a reflection on your or your talent; there are other, stronger things in play, all of which you have no control over.

The secret is not to give up, but to find an unorthodox way in. The same holds true of all the arts. Simply put, nobody's better than you. They may be luckier, but luck changes.

And remember "throwing in the towel" is a really tired cliche, and a waste of a good towel.

  2. Number one, you certainly don't suck.
And number two, if it's what you love, don't let some prick of a casting director get you down. You'd be the star of any of my shows, any day.
I guess what I'm saying is, you wouldn't have gotten this far if you didn't have talent. Just because you're going through a theatrical dry spell doesn't mean it's time to quit. And I agree with Nate... you'd be wasting a perfectly rad towel.
